Chora Sfakion is a village on the southwest coast of Crete. In 2011, it had a population of 212.
It has two ports, serving ferries from Agia Roumeli, as well as ferry connections to Loutro and the island of Gavdos.
To the west is a pebbly beach, one of the village’s main attractions.
Throughout history, Chora was occupied by both Venetian and Turkish forces. In the 18th century, the village had a small naval fleet. During World War II, it suffered bombing during the evacuation of Allied forces from Crete, following the Allied defeat in the Battle of Crete.
Chora was a famous place of resistance against both Venetian and Turkish occupiers. The surrounding mountain range facilitated fighting and repelling enemy attacks. Crete’s greatest revolutionary hero, Daskaloyanis, was born in the village of Anopolis.
